Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest NP

Nyungwe National Park is one of Rwanda’s oldest and largest rainforests, it is also a major water catchment area to the country and known for having over 1000 plant species and very tall trees that have formed large canopies. The tall trees inspired the construction of the canopy bridge, this suspended bridge hangs at the height of 70 meters above the sea level and elongates for 160 meters from its starting point to the end. A walk on this bridge rewards you with stunning views of the canopies that soar above the ground, various wildlife living in the forest like chimpanzees and amazing views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes.

The suspended bridge is a strong metal structure with either ends connected to the tall trees and it hangs across the valley floor, it is the second of its kind in Africa and the only one in East Africa which makes it unique. The floor that you walk is made up of a mesh floor and rails that enable you to see what is at the bottom, it is a scary and thrilling activity conquered by the strong and courageous. It is a great way to test your fear of heights, the walk takes about 20 minutes to admire and appreciate nature, and in order to guarantee your safety, only a maximum number of 12 people is allowed to walk on the bridge at a time.

During those 20 minutes, you have the opportunity to see different vegetation and tree types, the mesmerizing heights and sizes of the canopies, a variety of wildlife species like L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, white and black colobus monkeys, and elephants on the parks floor and have a close look at birds soaring at close heights with the bridge. The walk also enables you to enjoy the parks aerial views from an eagle’s eye.

The walk is a guided adventure, you are not left alone to cross from one end to another, it involves a hike from the Uwinka Reception center where you pay for your permit and are also briefed before heading over to your starting point. While there you walk for about 2 hours through the Igishigishigi trail and along the way you will notice some animals like monkeys and chimpanzees the main inhabitants and lovers of the various tall trees, different bird species, unique vegetation and a waterfall, this trail is the shortest and easiest to use before reaching the starting point where you get on the suspended bridge walkway.

The canopy walk adventure in Nyungwe National Park is a unique and memorable way to explore one of the oldest and most biodiverse rainforests in Africa. It is also a way to support the park’s management and conservation efforts, as part of the fees go to fund research and community projects.
